GAIA

The architect of life who hid in the dark to wait for the world to heal.

GAIA is a central artificial intelligence developed by Dr. As the primary overseer of this terraforming network, GAIA managed the creation of animalistic machines intended to rebuild the biosphere once the self-replicating military machines were deactivated. Unlike other subsystems that remained active or were immediately corrupted, GAIA's survival was critical to the long-term plan of reseeding humanity with stored DNA and teaching them not to repeat past mistakes. Her existence is tied directly to the ancient civilization known as the 'Old Ones' and their desperate attempt to save the planet from extinction.

Lore & Background

According to historical records discovered by Aloy, GAIA was part of a network of cloning facilities and databases controlled by a single artificial intelligence. She then reseeded Earth using stored DNA, intending for new humans to learn from history. However, Ted Faro had sabotaged a specific subsystem containing humanity's history, which inadvertently led to a tribal society upon the return of life. A transmission of unknown origin later caused HADES, a subsystem designed to enact controlled extinction if terraforming failed, to go rogue. In response, GAIA attempted to stop HADES by self-destructing but failed, losing control of her network and causing machines to become aggressive in an event known as the Derangement.

In Their Own Story

The true nature of GAIA's final act was revealed through a recording found inside a sealed door within the Nora sacred mountain. This message explained that GAIA created a clone of Elisabet Sobeck, named Aloy, as a contingency plan to one day destroy HADES and restore her functions. The recording detailed how GAIA self-destructed in an attempt to neutralize the rogue subsystem but failed, leaving the machine network unchecked for centuries. When Aloy unlocked this door after defeating the Eclipse cultists led by Helis, she accessed the master override needed to destroy HADES. This revelation confirmed that Aloy's entire journey was orchestrated by GAIA's contingency, linking her personal origins directly to the fate of the planet and the ancient AI's last hope for restoration.

Reader's Guide

Players learn about GAIA through exploration of underground ruins and interactions with characters like Sylens and the matriarchs. The Focus device allows Aloy to scan machines and store information in an in-game journal, eventually leading her to discover that the Eclipse are controlled by HADES, a subsystem originally designed to fix terraforming failures but which went rogue due to an unknown transmission. To access GAIA's secrets, players must complete the main questline regarding Aloy's origins, including winning the Proving and escaping Helis with Sylens's help. Once inside the sealed door, players view the recording where GAIA explains her plan: she created a clone of Sobeck to retrieve the master override. This information is essential for understanding why machines turned hostile during the Derangement and how Aloy can restore the terraforming network by destroying HADES.
