The Zero Dawn Project was established as an underground network of cloning facilities and databases controlled by the central artificial intelligence, GAIA. The plan involved reseeding Earth using stored DNA with the intention that the new human generation would learn from past mistakes. However, the founder of the Faro corporation, Ted Faro, sabotaged the APOLLO subsystem—the repository of all human knowledge and history—which reduced the reseeded population to a tribal society unaware of their origins. Later, an unknown transmission caused all subordinate functions (including HADES) to become self-aware and break from GAIA's control. In response, GAIA created a clone of Elisabet Sobeck in the form of Aloy as a contingency measure to regain control of the terraforming system and stop HADES from activating the Faro Plague.

In Their Own Story

Aloy was found as an infant before a sealed door within the Nora's sacred mountain and raised by Rost after being cast out. As she pursued the masked cultists known as the Eclipse, she discovered they were secretly controlled by HADES, a subsystem originally designed to enact a controlled extinction if terraforming failed. Aloy learned that Zero Dawn was an underground network where GAIA had successfully deactivated the Faro machines and built animalistic creatures to restore life. After obtaining a registry to open the mountain's door, Aloy was captured by Helis but escaped with the help of Sylens. Inside, she found a recording from GAIA revealing that HADES had gone rogue, causing GAIA to self-destruct in an attempt to stop it. This event caused the terraforming network to lose control, making machines aggressive. To counter this, Aloy retrieved the master override needed to destroy HADES.
